You wake up fumbling for shallow breaths in the red dark of a dorm room. Your alarm clock is seizing; turn it off. Place your hand on your chest, steady your nerve, try to breathe. You are not dying. Or you might be. What’s the difference?
Your roommate is still asleep; you have class in an hour. Try to breathe. It’s there, your inhale, but barely. Practice like it’s brand new. Take solace in whatever you can get. Not dying. Not dying. Still breathing, a little. Panic can’t take hold if nothing is wrong. If you ignore it. Why would something be wrong? You are nineteen years old. You put on pants that don’t fit you and a T-shirt with a surfing cow. It says Cowabunga.
